What does a company car cost you net per month in the Netherlands?
Many people think you pay the bijtelling yourself. You don’t: the taxable benefit is added to your salary and you pay tax on it. What you lose in net pay depends on your income. Calculate it precisely with the Dutch company car tax calculator.
Bijtelling in three steps
- Calculate the annual benefit: list price × bijtelling rate. For a petrol car that is 22%; for an electric car registered in 2026, 18% up to €30,000.
- Deduct any personal contribution you pay your employer for private use.
- Calculate the extra tax: the difference between the tax on your salary with and without the benefit.
Worked example: €40,000 petrol car
A petrol or hybrid car registered in 2024 with a list price of €40,000:
- Benefit: 22% × €40,000 = €8,800 per year (€733 a month)
- With a gross annual salary of €50,000, you pay about €370 net per month in extra tax.
- With a salary of €90,000, it is about €411 a month.
Why the difference? At higher incomes, the Dutch labour tax credit is still being phased out and you reach the top rate of 49.50% sooner. So the effective rate on the benefit is higher than the bracket rate alone. In 2026 it ranges from the basic rate of 35.75% to more than 55%.
What’s included and what isn’t
In return for the bijtelling, your employer usually pays all costs: lease, insurance, maintenance, road tax and fuel or charging. So compare the net cost with what your own car would cost each month, including depreciation and Dutch road tax.
A personal contribution you pay your employer can be deducted from the benefit. If you pay €100 a month, the benefit drops by €1,200 a year.
No bijtelling?
You don’t pay bijtelling if you can prove you drive no more than 500 private kilometres a year, for example with a complete trip log. Commuting counts as business use. Different rules may apply to vans.
Quick comparison
Torn between electric and petrol? A €45,000 EV from 2026 has a €8,700 benefit, about the same as a €40,000 petrol car. Read more in Dutch company car tax for EVs in 2026. Want to see what’s left of your salary? Use the Dutch take home pay calculator.
