Why the rate is not 49.5%
The top Dutch income tax rate is 49.5%, but you only pay it on the part of your income above the threshold of the top bracket. The first part of your income is taxed at the lower rate. Tax credits also reduce the tax, although the general tax credit and labour tax credit decrease as income rises: at €100,000 you receive much less of them than someone on an average salary. That is why your average rate is about 37%, while every extra euro (your marginal rate) is taxed at 49.5%.
Is the €100,000 including holiday allowance?
Dutch salaries are usually quoted per month, without the 8% holiday allowance. If your contract says €100,000 per year excluding holiday allowance, your total gross pay is €108,000 and your take-home pay will be higher than in the table. Always check which figure is meant, and enter it the same way in the calculator.
What changes the result
- Pension contributions: your share is deducted from gross pay before tax, which lowers both your tax and your take-home pay.
- 30% ruling: qualifying expats can receive part of their salary tax-free, which raises net pay considerably.
- Company car: the benefit in kind (bijtelling) is added to your taxable income. See the company car tax calculator.
- Mortgage interest deduction: reduces your tax via your annual return.
Elsewhere
In other countries the result differs a lot: in the US it depends on federal, state and local taxes; in the UK on income tax, National Insurance and the personal allowance taper above £100,000.
